County Week July 2011

This year we hosted Ladies Group 2, which provided play of a very high standard. The teams included a player with recent experience playing in The US Open girl’s singles and a fourteen-year-old girl who had won her first ITF title the week before our event

The event was not blessed with good weather and our back-up facility of astro and hard courts was soon in use. Nevertheless the full daily schedule of 3x9 rubbers was completed each day. The latest finish was under lights on the first day.

Hampshire, Middlesex, Dorset, Essex, Sussex and Leicestershire were in the line up. Hampshire began the week with a 5-4 win over the highly fancied Middlesex side, this being decided by an exciting final rubber, under lights, on the remote hard court 7, in front of the kind of numerous and enthusiastic support to which this court is not always accustomed.

Friday was to be our first full day on our brilliantly prepared grass courts. It was fitting that results up to this points were so close that four teams were still in a position to win promotion to Group 1. Two teams go up. Two teams stay put. Two teams go down. Hampshire had done well, scoring three 5-4 wins and one 4-5 loss during the first four days. A final day 5-4 win for Hampshire over Sussex and the way other results panned out led to a first place position for Hampshire and promotion to Group 1. Middlesex won three and lost two matches during the week. A 9-0 win and an 8-1 win showed their potential and three wins out of five, with a big rubber score, was enough to gain second place.

The non-playing Hampshire Captain was Sue Espley, a former Avenue member. She reached County standard as a player after making a very late start in the game. Members at the club remember her start in the game, as a grown up, hitting balls against our practice wall. She is a brilliant example to us all. She has played in events at Eastbourne and knows that the Hampshire girls are in for an equal treat next year when the play there in Group 1.

The use of the back-up courts led to some disruption in the daily events of our coaches who made every possible effort to support the event.

Wednesday night saw the Quiz Night and Buffet. The promised sumptuous buffet was an absolute treat and a ‘steal’ at £6. The brilliant Quiz saw the bar raised when it comes to standard of preparation and delivery.

The week’s events were only made possible by the many members who worked very hard in so many ways. Thank you all.

15.07.2011 The Avenue Summer Tennis Tournament took place on a wonderfully hot sunny June day.
The Club looked most welcoming with colourful flower beds and hanging baskets; finalists and spectators were able to purchase tea, cakes, strawberries and cream and also drinks from the bar. Everyone enjoyed watching the high level of tennis being played by the finalists. A big thank you to all those who participated in a very successful Summer Tournament and to those who helped run the event and man the bar.
Congratulations to all those winners and commiserations to all to the runners-up!
Thank you again Sue Kent and Ed Percival
